Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your journey begins with a departure from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where we complete the necessary formalities before starting your trek. The adventure kicks off with a hike through a stunning tropical rainforest. As you ascend, the forest gradually gives way to breathtaking hillsides, offering glimpses of blue monkeys along the upper forest line. En route, you'll traverse the quaint village of Marangu on the mountain's lower slopes before arriving at the park gate to prepare for the climb ahead. Your first afternoon of hiking takes you through the lush forest, where you can spot the elusive Colobus monkeys. The day's trek concludes at Mandara Hut, a delightful collection of A-frame huts located in a serene forest clearing, providing the perfect retreat after your invigorating hike.

Ascend steadily, traversing the lunar-like expanse of the "Saddle" located between Mawenzi and Kibo. Your camp, Kibo Hut, is strategically positioned at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Upon arrival, take time to rejuvenate and savor an early dinner in readiness for the forthcoming summit day.

In the early hours of the morning, typically around midnight, the arduous journey to the summit commences, marking the most mentally and physically taxing phase of the trek. Enduring extreme winds and cold at this elevated altitude and hour, you'll ascend through darkness for several hours, punctuated by frequent yet brief breaks. Upon reaching Gilman’s Point at 18,600 feet, a breathtaking sunrise unfolds, illuminating Mawenzi Peak in a spectacle of unparalleled magnificence. Finally, you'll achieve the pinnacle of your endeavor at Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

Following a period of reflection and admiration for the vast African plains and your remarkable achievement, the descent to Horombo Hut begins. Later in the evening, a final dinner on the mountain awaits, followed by a well-deserved rest.

On your concluding day, engage in a lengthy downhill trek through the lush tropical rainforest. Subsequently, a vehicle will be awaiting you here, facilitating your return journey to Moshi.
