A travel experience like no other

The Umbwe route on Mount Kilimanjaro is renowned for its stunning scenery, often hailed as the most picturesque among the trails. This camping route commences amidst the lush rainforest, winding its way to Umbwe Cave at 3000 meters, then ascending to Barranco at 3950 meters. From there, it joins the Kibo circuit, leading trekkers up to Barafu at 4600 meters in the alpine desert. This challenging yet rewarding path is best suited for seasoned hikers, offering a blend of serene forest strolls and a demanding ascent towards the summit. Rushing through it is ill-advised, as it requires careful navigation and appreciation of its natural beauty.

Itinerary

Day 1
Moshi-Umbwe gate- Umbwe cave

Following breakfast, the journey commences with a drive to the Umbwe gate situated at 1800 meters. From there, the ascent begins, navigating through the dense rainforest towards Umbwe Cave, a trek lasting approximately six to seven hours. Dinner and overnight accommodations are arranged at Umbwe Cave, located at an altitude of 3000 meters. Covering a distance of 11 kilometers and gaining an elevation of 1200 meters, the hike presents a steep but relatively brief excursion, offering an immersive experience amidst nature's splendor.

Day 2
Umbwe cave- Baranco camp

After breakfast, begin your ascent towards Barranco camp, ensuring you have your picnic lunch box with you. The path becomes steeper as you traverse through the ridge of valleys flanking both sides, offering picturesque vistas along the journey. Your day concludes with dinner and an overnight stay at Barranco camp, nestled at an elevation of 3950 meters on the moorland. Over the course of 6 kilometers, you'll ascend 950 meters, embracing the challenge and beauty of the trek.

Day 3
Baranco camp-karanga camp

After breakfast, tackle the Barranco walls, ascending to an altitude of 4250 meters before reaching Karanga camp at 4000 meters. Enjoy a hot lunch upon arrival, followed by relaxation and an opportunity to acclimatize with a short walk around the area, typically lasting 3-4 hours. Dinner and overnight accommodations are provided at Karanga camp, where you'll cover a distance of 4.25 kilometers, gaining 60 meters in altitude. Though steep, the walk is relatively short, offering a rewarding challenge amidst the stunning landscape.

Day 4
Karanga camp-Barafu camp

Breakfast around 8:30 am, proceed hiking to Barafu Camp at 4600 meters, a trek lasting 3-4 hours. Upon arrival, enjoy a hot lunch, followed by rest and an early dinner. Take a short nap before waking at about 11:00 pm to prepare for the summit, packing essentials and enjoying hot drinks and snacks. The ascent to the summit begins, lasting about 6-7 hours. Covering a distance of 4.86 kilometers with an altitude gain of 1295 meters, this challenging journey culminates in the breathtaking achievement of reaching the summit.

Day 5
Barafu camp-Uhuru peak-Mweka camp

Early in the morning, begin the hike to the summit, passing Stella Point at 5750 meters and heading towards the summit at 5895 meters before returning to Barafu for rest, lunch, and commencing the descent to Mweka camp for dinner and overnight stay. The trek from Barafu to Uhuru takes about 6 hours, while the return journey from Uhuru to Barafu lasts 3 hours. Subsequently, trek from Barafu to Mweka camp, covering a distance of 11.5 kilometers with an altitude loss of 2795 meters, concluding this challenging yet rewarding expedition.

Day 6
Mweka camp- Mweka gate

Breakfast served, begin the descent to Mweka gate at 1700 meters. The journey starts through the rainforest, lasting 2 to 3 hours, covering a distance of 9.1 kilometers with an altitude loss of 1400 meters. Upon arrival, meet the vehicle from the office for transfer to the hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a shower, lunch, and rest, marking the end of the climb.
