Arusha National Park

At the foot of Meru

Arusha.

Immediate immersion. A sanctuary in the shadow of Mount Meru.

Often overlooked in the rush toward the larger northern parks, Arusha National Park offers something very different — forest, crater, open grassland, and lake systems gathered into one compact and highly varied landscape.

Its advantage lies in immediacy. Close to Arusha, yet very different in feeling, the park offers an intimate safari setting shaped by Mount Meru, where the experience can include walking, canoeing, and a more active relationship with the landscape.

Montane Forest Arusha

Within the forest

The Montane Forest & Ngurdoto

The eastern side of the park is defined by dense montane forest, where tall fig trees, filtered light, and forest wildlife create a very different safari atmosphere from the open plains below. Colobus monkeys are among its most distinctive inhabitants.

Within this forest zone lies Ngurdoto Crater, sometimes referred to as a smaller counterpart to Ngorongoro. Its enclosed floor supports wetland habitat and regular wildlife movement, especially buffalo and warthog.

Momella Lakes

The Water World

The Momella Lakes

Fed by underground streams, the shallow alkaline Momella Lakes shift noticeably in colour and light. They attract flamingos and a wide range of water birds, giving this part of the park a quieter, more open rhythm.

Around the lake edges, giraffe, waterbuck, and bushbuck are often seen against the slopes of Mount Meru, creating one of the park’s most distinctive viewing settings.

Our Approach

How we approach Arusha
The MOAK Way.

The Walking Safari

Arusha is one of the few northern parks where walking forms a meaningful part of the experience. Accompanied by a ranger, you move through the landscape at ground level, where giraffe, buffalo, and the wider environment are felt at a very different scale.

By Canoe

Canoeing on the Momella Lakes offers one of the park’s most distinctive perspectives. It slows the experience down and shifts the focus toward waterbirds, shoreline movement, and the quiet atmosphere of the lake system.

A Better Beginning

Arusha National Park can work especially well at the start of a journey. Rather than moving immediately into a longer safari transfer, it offers a gentler beginning — one that lets the body settle and the senses adjust before the wider circuit unfolds.
